Bom, se x² - 13x + 42 = 0, a igualdade acontece, logo: (x1,x2) = (6,7).
Se x² - 7x + 11 = 1 a igualdade também acontece, logo: (x3,x4) = (2,5).
Note que se x² - 7x + 11 = - 1, então, x² - 13x + 42 = 2n, isto é, P(x) = x² - 13x + 42 deve ser par para que a igualdade ocorra.
Para x² - 7x + 11 = - 1 tem-se x = 3 ou x = 4.
Para x = 3, tem-se P(3) = (3)² - 13 . 3 + 42 = 12 (Ou seja, é par).
Para x = 4, tem-se P(4) = (4)² - 13 . 4 + 42 = 6 (Que também é par).
Como P(x) é par para x = 3 e x = 4, consequentemente, x = 3 e x = 4 também são soluções da equação inicial.
Deste modo: S = {2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7}.
Soma = 2 + 3 + 4 + 5 + 6 + 7 = 27.

A propósito, a ideia não é minha.
Esta questão, salvo engano, faz parte dos "coffin problems".
Se tiver interesse, dê uma procurada pelo termo. A história por trás desses exercícios, se for verdade, é bem bizarra/cruel, mas não deixa de ser "interessante".
Infelizmente, não conseguirei fornecer a fonte, porque eu não conheço. Só conheço o problema em si por já tê-lo visto em alguns outros momentos e outras questões semelhantes.
