Prepositions at the end of a sentence
Good afternoon, people,
My antepenult class with my teacher made me think about prepositions at the final of a sentence because my teacher of English that in some places of English language. Why I would be frowned upon doing this. Can someone explain me, guys?
P.S: I forgot to ask him about it.
Thanks in advance.
Sincerely,
José Ricardo.

Re: Prepositions at the end of a sentence
Hello Jose. First of all, I've never seen "antepenult" being used like this in a sentence; as far as I'm concerned, it is related to linguistics as the the third syllable of a word counting from the end. Regarding prepositions being used in the end of the sentence, it is a pretty common structure in spoken English (at least in the US), and understanding it is very important. Examples:
- This is the position I'm applying for;
- That is the place he is going to;
- Brazil is the country she comes from;
What exactly is your doubt?
Best regards

Re: Prepositions at the end of a sentence
My teacher once upon when he was doing exercises about sentences to pass them to relative clauses, one relative clause was a preposition at the final of it, and then he told to the class that in some places of a spoken country English (US, I think so) that if someone did this, this person person would look bad. That was my doubt.JoaoGabriel escreveu:Hello Jose. Re: Prepositions at the end of a sentence
Não sei se entendi bem, mas, geralmente, preposições no final da frase são parte de um phrasal verb.
Por exemplo:
Can you take your shirt off?
<< Esse off no final faz parte do verbo take. O phrasal verb é "take off" (que significa "tirar" http://dictionary.cambridge.org/dictionary/english-portuguese/take-something-off ), mas o off pode ou aparecer junto, como "Can you take off your shirt", ou no final, como no primeiro exemplo>>
Outros casos:
I'm going to take it down. (Eu vou desmontar isso/Eu vou anotar isso ~ Take down tem significado de anotar ou desmontar)
Ou também pode ser I'm going to take down it.
MAS NÃO SÃO TODOS os phrasal verbs que podem se separar e manter o mesmo significado. Veja:
I will take playing violin on it. (take ~something~ on significa aceitar um trabalho ou responsabilidade. Não confunda com take on ~something~, que significa começar a ter, usar ou fazer algo)
etc
EDIT!

Re: Prepositions at the end of a sentence
