__________ its channels became spacious avenues traveled

(From "A pleasant day in Manaus",
ÍCARO BRASIL, April 2002, page 33.)
– Fill in the blanks with the correct sequence of words:

b) had given – what – Lately – become – of
c) has given – how – The latter – to become – at
d) was given – when – Later – became – on
e) have given – which – The latest – becoming – around
a resposta é letra D ,mas nao entendi o pq , eu iria botar na primeira lacuna present perfect ja que ele nao mencionou o tempo, e sim o período

Re: UFPE-inglês
Realmente é a letra ''D", pois o advérbio when é o único que encaixa na lacuna (in the blanks).
Quanto a primeira lacuna, também estou em dúvida... Concordo com você... o "has given" encaixa também...Porém o simple past "was given" enxaixa perfeitamente...
??? Pensarei...

Let's try to translate this... Remember: this is a free translate, not a real translate. Take it easy, please! XD
"Throughout its 303-year history (Durante esses 303 anos de história), the tiny Manaós Indian
village around Fort São José do Rio Negro (à cidade indígena dos Manaós em volta do Forte São José do Rio Negro) __________ very
distinctive names (vários nomes diferentes). At the height of the rubber era, (na altura de uma determinada época)
__________ its channels became spacious avenues traveled
by streetcars (seus canais se tornem espaçosas avenidas onde carros podem passar), it was called the "Brazilian Paris" and the
"Tropical Metropolis" (essa cidade é chamada de "Paris Brasileira" e de "Metrópole Tropical"). __________, with the arrival of
industry (com a chegada da indústria), it __________ a "Free Zone" (é ... uma "Zona Livre) . Nestled in the middle
of the largest tropical rainforest (Estando no meio da maior floresta tropical) __________ the planet (do planeta), it is
now becoming the main "gateway" to the Amazon for
ecotourists (essa parte não precisa traduzir).
Then, we have this phrases:
"À cidade indígena dos Manaós em volta do Forte São José do Rio Negro" ... "vários nomes diferentes.".
Logically, we should change the ... to "was given" (foi dado).
"Na altura de uma determinada época," ... "seus canais se tornaram espaçosas avenidas onde carros podem passar, ...".
Seein this phrases, we think it don't need to be completed. But, seeing the options, we realize that is necessary something. This word is "when" (quando). Take a look of the end of this setence... The phrase keep going after this.
"... , com a chegada da indústria.".
We need a word with a time sense. It's possible to know that what happens in this phrase is something ocurred after the "rubber era". Then, that will be completed by "Later" (depois).
"... , com a chegada da indústria, ... uma Zona Livre.".
After something happen, something change its name. Then, we have something that turned another thing. Something became another thing. This phrase must be completed by "became" (tornou-se).
"Estando no meio da maior floresta tropical ... do planeta.".
That don't need to be completed. In Portuguese, of course. In English, we use the "around the" term for indicate something so general. For example, we have this phrase: "Nestled in the middle of the largest tropical rainforest around the planet.". Translated, it will be: "Estando no meio da maior floresta tropical ao redor do planeta.".
Then, the right answer is letter D.
I hope i helped you. ^_^

Eu acho que da para fazer essa questao gramaticalmente, pois recebe a açao,pensei agora em passive Voice, verbo to be no passado + o verbo no P.P. ,pq se fosse present perfect,a traduçao seria "deram" e nao "foi dado",que seria o mais coerente.

Bruna, seu raciocínio está correto, o sujeito sofre a ação na sentença que possui a primeira lacuna, logo se trata de voz passiva e por isso só pode ser a letra d
